He is glaring at his dad after being warned that if his ear gets cut that it wouldn't bleed too bad and Mr. Domann agrees and then talks about "nicking" old John Pantle's ear last week and comments that John's blood medicine made him bleed quite a bit. Dad jokes that if Mr. Domann cuts his ear he better get over the waste basket by the desk or "we'll have to pay extra for mopping the blood up off the floor."
He is determined to sit through and finish this job.
He knows the old men are teasing him and he bravely sits defiantly in the chair until the hair cut is over and Mr. Domann takes off the sheet around his neck. Later on the same day he tells dad, "I only get scared at night, but I'm not afraid of anything." His dad tells him to always remember that lesson because he is, "a true Father's Son."
